In 1899 the Athenians elected Spyros Merkoyris as mayor, which contributed to the radical reformation of infrastructure of city. On his time the water and transport network of city were improved. From 1901 with the first square Omonoia, the planting of trees in Athens began, while in 1902 the building flee market in the space of Keramikou was inaugurated and became work for the reformation of municipal market of Athens. From 1905 the road construction began with the first road Aiolou and in 1906 initially from the squares Omonoia and Suntagma the installation of electric lamps which replaced the lamps of gas began.
