ATHENS
HISTORICAL MUSEUM T. Vryzakis - The Exodus from Mesologi (1826)
Numerous works of Greek and European artists, from the 17th to the 20th century. The collection includes religious themes, portraits, landscapes, monuments and scenes from the struggle for independence, as well as scenes of daily life and traditional customs et al. The engravings produced by European travellers and devotees of antiquity are of particular interest, as they come from monumental manuscripts published by these travellers on their return home, and through these the Europeans became acquainted with ancient Greek civilization. Significant works: R. Daper, M.G.F.A. Choiseul Gouffier, O.M. von Stackelberg, and J. Stuart-N. Revett.
A prized part of the collection are the engravings made by philhellene artists, printed in Europe mainly for the purpose of raising funds for the War of Independence: Dupre, Friedel, Boggi, Krezeisen, von Hess, Lipparini, Gazassi, Gasparini, and others.
