The International Committee of Olympic Games announced the result of the voting for entrusting the Olympic Games of 2004 to the city of Athens and vindicating her long-lasting effort to entertain her Games.
Following the failure of the Greek candidature in the voting of Tokyo (1990) for the conduct of the Olympic Games of 2000, Athens submitted candidature for 2004 on 10 January 1996 after the decision that was taken in December 1995 in a deliberation in the Ministry Palace of Athens with the attendance of Athenians Mayor, Dimitri Avramopoulo, governmental factors and representatives of parties.
