The Greek refugees from the Asia Minor that met in Athens after the exchange of populations that was decided in 1923 with the treaty of Lozannis, was installed in the fringes of city, thus contributing in the irregular development and her inarticulate built-up extension (installation in the regions of Kaisarianis, New Philadelphia, New Smyrni, names taken from the lost homelands of Small Asia). However they gave impulse in the cultural and economic life of city. They contributed in the negative result of referendum on the maintenance royalty in 1924, but also in the continuation of opposing climate between Venizelians and Anti-Venizelians.
